Installing VMware Tools…

It seems to be a bit tricky to install VMware Tools into Red Hat Linux. Unlike Windows, where the whole process is almost automatically. When you click install, all you can see on your Red Hat desktop is VMware Tools Disc mounted on your desktop.

And when you navigate inside, you only see a file end with a compressed extension: “.tar.gz”

I gave a few shots, and finally found the best way to install the whole thing.

1. Double click on the compressed file, your linux should have a default “zip” program to handle the compressed file.

2. Once it is done, just simply “extract” the whole folder (everything inside) to your desktop.

3. Open your Terminal, navigate inside this folder, you will see something like the below picture:

4. Just type “./vmware-install.pl” and follow whatever prompt you next.

**You must have super user

privileges (i.e. be logged as root) to run it.

     ./vmware-install.pl

If you are installing VMware Tools for the first time, you can hit the <enter> key each time you are prompted to select the factory default answer. By default, the installation program installs:

       the executables         in /usr/bin,

       the server executables  in /usr/sbin,

       the library files       in /usr/lib/vmware-tools,

and the documentation files in /usr/share/doc/vmware-tools.

If you have previously installed VMware Tools, you can hit the <enter> key each time you are prompted to keep your previous answer, or you can decide to submit a new answer.

5. The last prompt will ask you to select the screen resolution, between 1 to 29. Just choose one that suit you.

6. Restart your Red Hat. Things should work fine now, from mouse controls to graphic adjustment.
