Connecting Wireless Router to Starhub VOIP Cable Modem

Had a tremendous hard time getting this done. This is the 1st time I actually spent more than 20 minutes setting a wireless network.

There was a weird problem with connecting my Linksys Wireless router to the StarHub newest (given) Motorola cable modem. It just don’t work at all. If you connect the cable modem straight to your computer, the network will auto connect itself, everything work like a charm. However, if I try to connect the modem to my router, it just stuck.

I set the router to “obtain a IP address automatically”, it Don’t work. Reseted the router and retry the whole thing, it Don’t work. Thought of setting static addresses, but it sounds absurd.

So I asked around, everyone told me that Linksys has a lot of problems and so.. Quite disappointed, Linksys used to be the best router. Even at one time, if StarHub bundled every single broadband plans with Motorola cable modem and Linksys router.

I was also told that Dlink routers are now the “preferred choice” for StarHub. And so..

Actually, I have the same problem with Dlink when I did the settings. It just won’t connect. Addition to my problems, I was requested to key in the “hostname” for the settings. Where the hell is the hostname? I never know StarHub need one. Did some googling, don’t get any thing near. So I just gambled and keyed it “StarHub” (this hostname worked for me apparently).

After exhausted with all options and ideas, I decided to try a myth; Switch off the router and modem at the same time, and turn it on again (at the same time).

Guess what? IT WORKED!!!

Bloody Hell…

StarHub MaxOnline delivered its promises (unlike Singtel). They do provide up to 8MBs of download (MaxOnline Express). I’m impressed with the given speed.
