Living & Working In Indonesia… Currently adapting to the colorful lifestyle and crazy traffic jam of Jakarta.

Another side of Jakarta…

A few interesting pictures I took using my BlackBerry Bold:

Rare occasion where Police help their fellow citizen…

This is one of the main site where they throw their rubbish..

Well, this is a pull-kart.. They usually do some business like selling stuff, or food… etc. Still a common thing in today Jakarta streets!

This is a contingency plan for flood. An impressive work by the local authorities. A helping hand for the brave ones to cross the ocean..

Chinese In Indonesia

It was Chinese New Year (a few days ago) in Indonesia Jakarta, many tourist are not surprised  to see CNY decorations around malls, apartments, everywhere.. Younger generations may take it for granted. But little do they, or you know that 11 years ago, this is almost impossible for Chinese, to celebrate their festival so openly.

From late Colonial period to Post-independence era, the Chinese have a complicated history in living in Indonesia.

Back in the era of late President Soekarno and Suharto, the Indo-Government  were strong advocate for Chinese assimilation, rather than integration.

Part of 1967’s “Basic Policy for the Solution of the Chinese Problem” and other measures:

1. All but one Chinese-languare papers were closed.
2. All Chinese religious expressions had to be confined to their homes.
3. Chinese language schools were phased out.
4. Chinese script in public places were banned.

Even before this, one of the anti-Chinese legislations in 1966 (after Suharto came to power) such as 127/U/Kep/12/1966 mandated that ethnic Chinese living in Indonesia adopt Indonesia-sounding names instead of the standard Chinese names.

Chinese Indonesian have been quite creative in adopting  Indonesian-sounding names. Some adopted western names as first names, such as Albert or John, and Javanese names for the family names.

The adopted Javanese names were often based on their phonetics, though not always the case. For example, one with surname “Lim” may adopt “Limanto”, and other may adopt “Halim” as Indonesia-sounding names. Both “Limanto” and “Halim” contain “Lim” are in tune with Chinese way of speaking.

The Indonesianized names – basically Hokkien syllables with western or Indonesian words – resulted in so many exotic sounding names, that people can tell accurately whether a person is an Indonesian Chinese based only on his/her name.

Most of these legislations were revoked following President Suharto’s registration in 1998. Chinese in Indonesia are again allow to use their original names. And along with all other Presidents who came into power in hope of gaining the chinese votes, they had allowed the Chinese to celebrate their festivals in public and openly.

Boot Camp cannot partition because….

some files cannot be moved?

It showed you the below error message:

“Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again.”

Honestly, I had encountered some problems with Boot Camp before. Especially when you are on the process of doing the partition. Most of the time, such problem will occurs because you have previously remove a Boot Camp partition, restore the volumes back to a single volume and now, you wanted to reinstall Boot Camp all over again.

This error, can be easily solved by booting into Single-User-Mode, and type in:

fsck -fy

However, Boot Camp cannot partition because some files cannot be moved? This is really new to me. It happened to me once, but I forgotten how I did it. Now, my colleague had this problem..

Simple Facts you need to know:

When a partition is created the computer moves all files to one area of the current partition so that it can have a clean new partition. In your case it appears that your drive is fragmented (files scattered throughout the drive) and Boot Camp is having issues trying to consolidate them in one area. Try moving any large files to an external drive and see if that helps. Perhaps try making a smaller partition size of Windows under Boot Camp.

So for me, I just boot his mac up via Target-Disk-Mode, connect to my MBP via Firewire and use iDefrag. I choose “Compact” settings and run the whole entire thing for about 3 hours.

After that, reboot his mac, start-up Boot Camp assistant and everything runs like a charm. So deframentation, is quite useful after-all in Mac. iDefrag also help to speed up your system, linking the files you accessed frequently, and linked them up in HotZones, so you can access faster.

Jakarta’s Wet Monsoon

Oh it is coming… water everywhere. Due to the rubbish stuck in the sewer and many other unclear reasons, the water “flow” out to the roads and hit the streets. Many Indonesian are so used to the flood, to the extent that they treat it as part of their “season”.

If we are to look into the problem, it all narrows down to:

1. Rubbish throwing…

2. And Govertment efficiency…

Simple.. Below are a few pictures I took, when I was on my way to work..

Some of my guys even said that they saw fishes in the water… Well, I don’t like getting my own shoes and socks wet. So I prepared a “rescue bag” for such emergency:

Nice and neat..

My BlackBerry Bold

W/O 2nd thoughts, BlackBerry instant message, push mails, Internet Service, Yahoo/Msn Messenger features are must have for me.

These features, allow me to stay on touch with company emails. BlackBerry allow me to speak with other HOD instantly. And also, if the stupid Indosat USB modem is down again, it allows me to stay in touch with my girlfriend (via YM).

After trying iPod Touch for 3 weeks, I have decided that iPhone is not really for me (though I can live with one for free).

1. I hate virtual keyboard. Yes, I like to “press”. Nothing beat that feel.

2. Battery. On Touch itself, it is already quite bad with facebook app alone.

3. iPhone will be too multimedia than for work.. Sorry, the games are too alluring..

4. After trying BlackBerry Bold (a.k.a BBB), I could not stop typing , sending sms & emails.. :)

5. After using Nokia E Series 61, I noticed that I am only used to “fat mobile” keying.. Nokia E Series 71 is good, but too slim. My little fingers cramped, if I typed for a whole.

The only problem I had was registering “online” via telkomsel Service.

The whole ONLINE registration is supposed to be as easy as ABC:

Send SMSĀ  BB<Space>REG to 333 to request for activation.

*They will send you a reply, telling you “thank you”, the charges for the services (180 000RP) for unlimited, and the date it will start charging you.*

To confirm the activation, subscribers must send BB<Space>ON to 333, it will activate the service on subscriber’s SIM Card.

Subscribers will be charged Rp 350 per SMS to 333.

After you received the “Thank You” SMS, restart your handheld.

Then proceed to: http://telkomsel.blackberry.com to register your BlackBerry BoldĀ  PIN, IMEI and Email accounts.

Simple? But It gave me big time headache. Sigh, could not explain the sub-standard quality services…

After a week of trying, I finally got it up. X-Files…

Nevertheless, everything is awesome. However, the 2 megapixels camera is not very impressive. Easily affected by “handshake” and other elements..

Other than it, I am a happy man…
