Stylist, not just HairDresser!

I am afraid to admit the core reason why I preferred a long hair style; I hate to cut my hair.

Many times, these hairdressers gave me this short, neat, student look which made me look like a nerd. And when they cut this short, I’d to remain looking like a nerd for quite a few months. I only felt better when my hair grew long enough, long hair generate the confidence I need.

So when was the first time I was truly satisfied with my haircut?

A visit to a HairStylist Salon in Malaysia KL (many years back), just right before Chinese New Year. I did a coloring (brownish), haircut and treatment altogether. The price tag was about 230+ RM. Considered cheap from a Singaporean’s financial point of view.

Q: Why Malaysia?

A: Cheap!

Q: What spurred you?

A: The Price Tag.

Though I must admit that it was steep for most Malaysian, but worth every ringgit! Done away with the traditional way of combing, threw my jelly and had embraced the flexibility of used wax, clay and messy styling ever since. No more late nineties Aaron Kwok’s hairstyle! From there, I understand the difference between hairdresser and stylist.

Unfortunately, my haircut experience in Singapore did not go that well. I dun seems to be able to get the kind of satisfaction I had with the HairStylist Salon I visited in Malaysia. In Singapore, “SuperCut” is the only Salon I visited frequently. My Stylist (Stella) did a great job. But they have too much promoting for their shampoo and wax, I ended up buying things I dun really need. On top of that, the price is kind of scary.

Nevertheless, “SuperCut” is so much better than “Jean-Yip”. I visited “Jean-Yip” (Bishan Branch) in July, the experience was horrible. The apprentice seemed lost and disorganized. The steps were all wrong and he never even dry my hair for the cut.

The worst experience came from the “Stylist”. I mentioned to him that my hair was too thick and long and I would want something fresh.

“Short and neat??” He asked half-heartedly.

“Not short and neat for sure. Trim cos it is too thick and too long…” I told him.

And he followed my “preference” without prompting for other questions or suggestions. The result? I dun see any difference..

“#$%@&*.. Got cut meh?” I was swearing and cursing. The side looks shorter (by a bit), but my hair still look as thick as before and my fringe was worst.

And I regretted for not going back to Stella. However, I am quite lazy to make a trip down to Somerset just for a cut. Ever since I started working at BitS, I’ll be yawning when the clock strikes 7 pm. So I decided to gamble with my luck again with one a Salon situated in the basement of Ang Mo Kio Hub. Their young apprentice had the same service attitude like Jean-Yip, but the Stylist made my day. She asked me simple questions, paid attention to the length of my hair and style, and gave me the cut which I always want.

How did she know what I want? Considered the fact that she did not know how I “looked” like before the apprentice washed my hair, I am impressed. This is someone who truly deserved the designation “Stylist”.

This song is written by a Malaysian Chinese Student who is studying at Taiwan. If you have Malaysian friends, they might know him as he is quite famous in Malaysia.

This is not his the first song he wrote, but this song bought him both fame and trouble.

Political troubles.

Well, listen yourself. Enjoy!

Podcasting for Education (Singapore Version)

Podcasting is not new in the West, especially in the States and UK. And they integrated Podcasting into their education system, helping their students to embrace this new form of digital technology. In my personal opinion, will eventually replace the traditional ways of distributing medias to students. Podcasting is not really what they call it now, they call it “iTunes University ” aka “iTunesU”. Apple, a regular player in education field, saw the possible future for Podcasting and let iTunes do the promoting.

Q: How are we (Singapore) doing now?

You mean zapping materials? Sure that was THE way in the nineties, but don’t be surprised that we are still doing now. Computer labs in school are common these days, and we are now moving forward with CDs, PDA and Ultra Portable PC etc.

Q: Credibility, Please!

Me? I am currently working for a Training Company (BitS) as a Consultant, advising on matters relating to Macintosh Software, products and developments, especially in education. I’d talked to many teachers, their Head of Department and IT Coordinators. Everyone of them were interested in Podcasting. However, there is a huge distance to cover. Podcasting for Education are not the “in” thing for Singapore Institutions.

Q: We already have Podcast National Competitions for schools!

So? Don’t get the wrong meaning. The Competition is good, for a start, to promote Podcast. But it depends on your direction. To the schools, this is consider a good CCA, but what is the agenda for running such competition? Just to hold the event, and get done over with?? You need to show not only to the students, but also the educators on how the Podcast works! How educators can apply it on their training materials and make their lesson more interesting and interactive.

Q: Please, most educators had already heard of Podcasting!

At least 75% of them heard of Podcasting. And out of 75%, only about 30% of them knows how it actually works. Based on this figure, we are not even near for a good start. Well, our education is quite different from the West.

Q: So what is stopping us???

Objectively speaking, it is the structure of our education system…

Q: Blasphemy!!!

Hear me out, our education system are quite different from the West. In Singapore, all schools shared a generic Server and Ministry of Education actually allocate storage from the server to different schools. Which means that they don’t have their own dedicated server.. Well, they do, but for their own Local Area Network, they are not meant for HTTP web hosting. While in the West, their education structure is different. More freedom and decision for schools to act on their own. They are responsible for their own site, server and media broadcasting. On top of that, the Professors and Lecturers seems to be eager to have their own individual domains and site/blog and Podcasting is something they do to encourage their students to go beyond the textbooks.

They find it their responsibilities to bring interactive lessons to their students. Indirectly, it brings in more fun and joy.

Moody Bluez

I posted a article on North Korea 3 days ago. However, no thanks to MidPhase who suffered another server breakdown, and I lost my data completely.

I was pissed, exchanged a few emails with their tech support and finally, they restored my data back from their backup. I dun meant to be nasty, I worked in Post Sales environment before and I know how they feel (& curse) whenever they received customer’s email/feedback/complaint on something they could not control. However, my domain went down for 3 days and a loss of two articles really boils my blood.

Now, I have to “retype” my article on North Korea.

As if I got nothing better to do.

If you are looking for a good hosting plan cum you don’t need static IP (if you do not know what is static IP then you most properly don’t need it anyway), go take a look at Dreamhost. I hosted a few sites with Dreamhost like www.ourbits.com & www.askthemacguru.com.

Why do I choose MidPhase for my Blog?

Some smart IT “guru” told me that Cpanel rocks! Giving you the total control over your site. Including the Stats report and many other advantages. End up, I never really touch any of them. If you really need a Stats Report on your site, go apply Google Analytics. Extremely Powerful and FREE!

And,

Dreamhost actually increase your Storage and Bandwidth weekly. The longer you host with them, the more you get!

Then then.. How come you..

Stop it! I regretted my choice okay?

Designation does matter!

Job designation present your portfolio image immediately to the crowd when:

  1. Someone ask you what are you working as (in causal manner)
  2. You exchanged name cards in some Business Conferences
  3. You are sending emails for business enquires and support

Of course there are more, but I just want to make this simple. Anyone of you who are reading this now already have an idea what I am trying to say.

Recently, I discovered that it also affect the way and the time it takes for people to respond to you. I’ll share with you my experiences:

“unemployed” – never receive your mail

“Mac Evangelist” – Sorry, who am i speaking to?

“Training Supervisor” – Ok, I am sure your email is somewhere in my inboxes.

“Training Manager” – OF course I’d read your mail! No problem on our side…

“Training Consultant” – You got to be kidding me, of course your mail is my top priority!
